Sleep and mental health information for partners

Happy parents cuddling baby

It’s not always easy knowing the best way to help out your partner in those early days of parenthood.

Coping with sleep deprivation is often one of the biggest challenges new parents face.

Every family has a different approach to balancing parent’s sleep with their baby’s care needs. It can help to discuss with your partner what might work best. You could even try out a few different options to see which helps you both get the most sleep.

There are many factors that influence what might work best for you including:

  • The physical and mental health of your partner
  • Your physical and mental health
  • Whether you or your partner (or both) are returning to work or managing current work/study commitments
  • Whether there are other children (or people requiring care) in the household
  • Whether you have a spare room or somewhere else suitable for adequate sleep
  • Whether you or your partner are taking any medications or other substances such as alcohol

There is no one ‘best fit’ for everyone.
